We were up early, Dale earlier than me (which is typical when we are on vacation). He enjoyed his coffee on the balcony while I slept in til about 6am, he was up by 5:30 or so. We had a 9am reservation for the Character Breakfast at Makahiku Restaurant, but that was hours from now. It was nice to just sit and relax with a cup of coffee on the balcony and watch the sky change colors as things came to life.
We showed up a few minutes early to check in for our reservation. You are given a card with your name on it and directed to a line to go meet Mickey and get photos with him. I had originally thought I’d get photos with all the special characters but this didn’t happen. We truly enjoyed the week, so this breakfast was special as we also saw Chip & Dale and Minnie.
After seeing Mickey, you are escorted to your table where we started breakfast with a tropical mimosa. The characters make their way through the restaurant stopping at each table to for photos. This was a price fix breakfast, so you were served a delicious Malasadas (Hawaii's favorite Portuguese donut) and a tropical parfait with fresh pineapple, coconut, yogurt, mochi and granola. The fruit this entire trip was so fresh and delicious.
Like anyone traveling these days, we had checked out the menu long before getting here, we watched YouTube videos about Aulani and we were still checking out the menu because there were so many amazing options. I opted for the traditional omelet which was served with herb roasted potatoes and so much food (I saved 1/2 for another day). Dale ordered the buttermilk pancakes because everyone has raved over the macadamia nut-tahitan vanilla sauce that comes with them. This was a huge serving and he actually had one pancake left for another breakfast. The benefit of having a villa with a full kitchen. The characters made their way to our table while we awaited our food and we got to see each of them and get photos. First up was Chip, then Dale, then Minnie. Our food arrived shortly thereafter so we were able to eat without the interruption of stopping for photos, which was really nice how they plan this.
After we left completely full and with enough food for another breakfast, we made a pit stop drop our food back at the room. Then we set out for the DVC area to check in and see about some things going on at Aulani. We met a great cast member there Joy who was so not 'pushy' and we chatted with her for a bit. We took the obligatory photo.
We took a quick walk across the street as everyone has said you have to go to the ABC store (it's a small convenience store right across the street) there is also a Starbucks right there and several really good places to eat (we hit up a couple later in the week).
